Genesis 35:16-29

What does it mean to truly be on a journey of faith, and how does that journey shape not just our present lives but our eternal future? Genesis 35 pulls back the curtain on the life of Jacob, a man whose struggles, missteps, and moments of grace mirror our own experience with startling honesty. We see him leaving Bethel, the very place where God had met him and renewed his calling, and stepping back into a world of consequence and grief. Rachel dies in childbirth. Reuben commits a betrayal that fractures the family. Isaac breathes his last. And yet through all of it, God is not absent. He is weaving something larger than any single sorrow or failure. The central truth pressing through every verse is this: the Christian life is not a series of disconnected events but a purposeful pilgrimage, and how we engage with it matters deeply, not only for today but for eternity. The decisions we make, the lessons we absorb, the times we return to God after wandering away, all of it is forming us into something we will carry with us forever. This passage invites us to stop asking only why hard things happen and start asking what God is revealing through them.
