Acts 5:1-16

This powerful exploration of Acts 5:1-16 confronts us with a sobering reality: God takes the purity of His church seriously. The story of Ananias and Sapphira isn't just ancient history—it's a mirror reflecting our own struggles with hypocrisy and half-hearted commitment. We see a young church experiencing incredible growth and generosity, where believers like Barnabas were selling possessions to help those in need. But then comes this couple who wanted the recognition without the sacrifice, the applause without the authenticity. They lied not just to the apostles, but to the Holy Spirit Himself. The immediate judgment that followed wasn't cruelty—it was God establishing a foundation of holiness at a critical moment in church history. What strikes us most is Peter's question: 'Why has Satan filled your heart?' Even as believers, we can be influenced by deception when we prioritize appearance over reality. The aftermath is remarkable: great fear fell on the church, yet multitudes were added to their number. When the church took holiness seriously, God's power flowed freely. This challenges us to examine our own hearts—are we bringing our whole selves to God, or just the parts that look good to others? The call here isn't to perfection, but to authenticity and reverence for the sacred space we occupy as God's people.
